It takes very different time, it depends on a person, if you are talented for music, you should reach the first steps first, as you are learning guitar, maybe the best way is to buy some guitar lession cd's and you can learn it by yourself, how long does it take... you can learn to play guitar all life because with years and experience you get even much better, you better start with classic or acoustic guitar and then you can start with electric guitar, ask a friend who can already play it, to learn you some tricks, if you take this way you will learn it fast, and keep in mind your favorite musicians and try to play some songs just as you are listening them, have fun , i learned the first most important things about guitar playing in 5 months

You can learn how to play the guitar in about an hour. However, it takes about 6 years of intense study to get a Master's degree in performance. I could teach someone how to play the guitar in a very short period of time, but they aren't going to be great players until they take a LOT of training.
