I am planning to purchase a 1992 Suzuki GSX-R 600, the guy that is selling it said the electric starter does not work.

What is the difference between a kick start and electric start?

How much does a replacement usually cost?

Is installation difficult and expensive?

Is this a big problem?

I would appreciate advice and good info.

Thanx

The electric starter is just like the one on a car only on a bike it eleminates the need too kick-start the bike which is a pain . Installation cost will vary depending on the shop. The cost of the part will be the same . Since the bike is a 92 it probably does not have a kick-start so it is a big issue for two reasons first because it wont start, second because you cannot hear it run so you cant tell if it runs correctly. If you have a motorcycle dealer in your area they can tell you how much it will cost for parts & labor. If not go too suzuki.com & ask them in the help section of that site.

Pass on the bike. An electric start is an electric starter, that cranks the engine, until the spark plug starts to work to keep the engine running. The only other alternative is to kick start it, provided that it has a kick starter, or by pushing it while the clutch is depressed, and the bike is in second gear, then popping the clutch to let the friction of the wheels turning, to crank the engine. The pushing method will wear out your clutch real fast, and the kick starter, will wear out your legs. After 10 - 15 attempts to kick start the engine, you'll be amazed at the number of foul mouth words you'll be able to describe for the piece of crap that you ended up buying. The price of a new electric starter motor can run several hundred dollars, not to mention the cost of having it installed.

An electric starter is the same as a car starter. It starts the vehicle by turning the key or by pressing a button.

The alternative is a kick start which is very old school and is a manual method of starting the vehicle. You can still see these on dirt bikes.

To replace the starter is not that big of a deal. You can get one for about $157.96 + shipping. You can still push start the bike so you can test ride it and if the starter is the only issue I would get it.

i would expect a goot discount for a bike that does not run. Otherwise tell the owner to fix it and then you might buy it.

That model doesn't have a kick start.
So you won't be able to start it to even see if it runs.
Depending on the problem, it could be over $300 parts and labor to repair.
Could be starter motor - starter clutch - starter solenoid - starter switch, or wiring (which would need electrical trouble shooting charged by the hour to figure out the problem).

Buy the bike if that is the only problem. For $200 and an hour of work, you are on your way.
