This is a problem I have too and I live by myself. I don't understand how things can run off and hide for days, weeks or months at a time. Right now I'm looking for a daily notebook. This is, as I said, a notebook I use several times a day and last night it just disappeared. After I finish my coffee I'm getting up a posse and we're going after it. You are correct on the second part of your question too, in my humble opinion.

I am the perpetrator in this situation often. In my home, I move other's things and it annoys the c$%p out of them. So why do I move them? Well I'll admit I'm a little OCD. I like for tables to be cleared off - or rather for only those items I have preordained to be on the tables or counter tops. So I end up moving things to the "places" in drawers, corners or trays, where they are not visible. I have many "junk" drawers and the items end up in those drawers. But the system of what junk goes in what drawer, tray or corner, seems to be lost on those people I live with. Also - I have poor short term memory, so I forget which drawer I placed them.
My advice is to have a discussion about where you want to put your things, preordain a certain space for them, that way if you don't put the item in the space and they get moved, they may get moved to that space.

Oh, that drives me bonkers. But yes, It is the price we pay. After all, it's not like I can nail my coffee mug to the table. Wait- If I had to always lift the table to drink my coffee I'd have mega biceps! Grab me a hammer!

Yes. My mother in law moves my purse or my stuff no matter where I put it when I come to her house. It really annoys me.
