I'm not sure webmaster is used as a job title in the professional world anymore. Typically it's called a Web Developer.

For the most part, professional IT shops do NOT use WYSIWIG (What You See Is What You Get) editors like Dreamweaver and Frontpage. The code it all themselves. WYSIWIG editors are for people who want to design webpages but don't want to learn how to program.

You'll need a thorough understanding of HTML, XHTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

You'll need to learn a back-end language to handle the real work of the site (database calls and whatnot).

There are two primary ones used by most businesses: Microsoft .NET (VB.NET/C#/ASP.NET) and Java (J2EE/JSP).

If you can learn a real object-oriented compiled language then it's assumed you can handle any PHP that comes along.

You should also learn SQL.

That's what you need to be a web developer/web programmer. If you want to be a web designer/graphic artist then that's entirely different.

"Webmaster" isn't widely used as a title any longer. The role has pretty much splintered into three specialties: 1) web designer, 2) web developer/programmer, and 3) web/interactive marketer. There's a large and very different body of knowledge associated with each, and there are very few people who are experts in all three. In fact, there tend to be sub-specialties, such as designers who specialize in Flash animation, and web marketers who specialize in search engine optimization. There are great career opportunities in all three areas. My advice: pick the one you are best suited for and attend a technical college that specializes in that field.

Very good question. The best way to become a webmaster is to learn basics of webdesigning. eg HTML, PHP/ASP, graphic designing etc. Once you have done that apply for a trainee position. Our company offers a few internships in web
technologies.

Go to school and suffer through it like I am. I'm actually in class right now. (programs to learn are probably Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Macromedia Flash)
