A bicameral system is needed in the federal government because less populated states would not have joined the union if they didn't have the protection of equal representation in the US Senate. If that were done away with, the terms of their agreement with the Federal Government would be violated, which would give them the option of quitting the union (morally anyway) and could tear the country apart. Also, to change that arrangement would require a Constitutional amendment, which in turn would require a 2/3 vote in the US Senate and/or the states. This would be very unlikely considering the number of small states which and their US Senators.

I don't see the need for bicameral legislatures within State Governments on the other hand. Usually in state governments, members of both houses are elected from districts of about equal population. In those cases it seems like an extra hurdle for legislation to get through without much reason.

On the other hand, I think it would be a good idea to have state senators and state reps chosen by different methods. There could be one senator chosen by a majority of the voters in the district ( after a run-off election if necessary), which is about the way it is done now.

There could also be more than one state rep per district, and they could be chosen so that the top 2 or 3 (or however many there are) are elected. That would give more factions of society a chance to be represented.

Is there a specific question about these systems? Unicameral is a single house legislature and bicameral is a two house legislature.

The only unicameral legislature that exists in the United States is the State of Nebraska. Probably because there aren't enough people in that state to merit two houses.

Unicameral is one house of the legislature

Bicameral is two houses of the legislature (like the House and Senate in the U.S. Congress)
