It is what you are called. It is the word used to label you and define you, making you different than everyone else. It is the word given to you to identify you.

A name is a label for a human, thing, place, product (as in a brand name) and even an idea or concept, normally used to distinguish one from another. Names can identify a class or category of things, or a single thing, either uniquely, or within a given context. A personal name identifies a specific unique and identifiable individual person. The name of a specific entity is sometimes called a proper name (although that term has a philosophical meaning also) and is a proper noun. Other nouns are sometimes, more loosely, called names; an older term for them, now obsolete, is "general name".

When you are naming your child you are actually choosing their personality and mapping out their life. Every name has a meaning. Be sure to check the meaning of a name before giving your child that name. When you look up the names check out names of people you know to see if their name matches their personality. I am sure you will find a direct link between their name and their behavior.
