I hate the new neighborhoods they're building these days. "We have 5 models to choose from!" Yeah, but the subdivision has 200 houses...so the majority of your neighbors have your same exact house! They're also cramming the houses so close together, you can't even use the toilet for fear that your neighbor is washing her dishes in the kitchen sink and will see you wiping yourself! Plus (like you said) they're building on farm land, and there are NO trees around.
We live in an apartment now (moved out of state recently and haven't bought a house yet), but when we owned our house back in Michigan, I loved it! Built in the '60s, nice, big yard, built to last (not like the flimsy cheaply constructed houses they're building today), huge oak and maple trees surrounding the place.
I abhor these new neighborhoods that are springing up like dandelions. What's worse is that the houses are HUGE. I live in Metro-Atlanta, and it's nothing to see a 3,000 square foot house with a sign at the front of the subdivision "Houses now being built! Starting at $1 million." WHAT?! Who needs a house that big, first of all, and why would you POSSIBLY pay that much when you don't even have a yard!! I can guarandamntee that the majority of the people who buy houses like this probably have only one kid (or maybe even none at all). It's completely wasteful, if you ask me.
My sister-in-law built a beautiful 4,000 square foot house in a brand new subdivision. $500,000, very modern brand new everything, good area of town (this is in Michigan where real estate isn't nearly as expensive as it is in Atlanta, hence the price difference between here and there), 4 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, full basement, blah blah blah. They have ONE child, and the kid doesn't even have a yard to play in. Their front yard is about (seriously) the size of a standard office cubicle, and the back yard is a "shared courtyard" with all the other houses on that street. WTF? It truly makes me sick. Such a waste! No wonder people in other countries think we, as Americans, are so gluttonous, braggardly (is that a word, lol?), etc. Mainly because so many of us are!!
Me? I'm happy in my 2 br/2ba 1,400 square foot apartment. I have two toddlers and a husband, and I'm perfectly content right where I am. Eventually one day I'd love to have a house again, and you know what? I'm going to look for an older house (maybe 1960s era) that's about the same size as our apartment is now--maybe a few hundred square feet bigger, but that's it.

I think you will be hard pressed to find some one to disagree with you.
Personally I do not even like to go to a city for a visit.
We have to drive about 4 to 6 hours either direction to hit one, and I pray every day it will stay that way.
I compare them with concrete monsters, and all the people in one place would make me feel like I was living in an ant hill; thank you I'll pass.
My husband grew up in the "big city", and he would not go back if you gave him a house for free.
I believe that by having to live, and work so closely together people have become less tolerant of one another as well.

I can't stand it either. What puzzles me are all the people who choose to live in those neighborhoods that the houses are a foot and a half apart. How do they even find thier house when they get home? The houses look so similar. And how they chop down all the trees to plant little tiny trees in a neat little row.
Have you ever heard a cat cough up a fur ball? Enough said.

I am with you on this one! It breaks my heart to see family farms turned into subdivisions. Recently in my area an entire orchard was leveled to build a "wealthy" housing development and they had the nerve to name the subdivision "The Orchards" Can you believe that??? I live in an old house with its own personality and character and would not have it any other way. This house was built to stand the test of time.
Peace.

I just got back from a visit to the beautiful wide open Arizona desert and it made me feel sick to come back home. Every time there is a nice open space of land they build housing developments. No open space. No place for my son to run free. I wish I lived out west.

America the Beautiful is disappearing, keep your concrete in the cities.
