I am taking uber rich here...those who would have more money than could ever spend in a lifetime. Still they seek out to increase their fortune by more and more.

Is it just greed or perhaps terrible insecurities that makes them surround themselves with more and more money?

Is it fame...when they are already famous...or infamous?

Every one is right to a certain extent, some people go on and on making money because of power and greed especially the global corporations.

Most mega rich people however are extremly talented gifted individuals who have made a success of their basic inherent potential. So personally for me I feel these people are to be embraced, they are not greedy or lusting for power, they have an urge to impart their world, creative or otherwise to the rest of the world. These people, I could name loads of famous names but you know who I'm talking about...the great scientists, authors, artists, sports, politicians, etc. all share one thing in common. They appreciate their talent comes from a devine, cosmic entity, some call it God.

They do not take it for granted they have been sent here for a reason, these are the ones that unbeknown to the general public donate a lot of their proceeds to various charities etc..and require no recognition for this as they do it because it seems right.....the unwritten rule of financial gain from your gifted nature..

Power and greed comes from ordinary/average individuals with money forced upon them, they cannot handle the effects they do not know why or what to do with it, they do not even know themselves and what they are known for..this can become its own burden as often seen when megarich people retreat to rehabilitation clinics etc..to find themselves.

Our current culture of celebrity status ensures this will continue....but as long as gifted individuals keep contributing to society then thats ok.

I think there is more than 1 force at work here. I feel, greed has an important part to play, but it is not the only thing.

It wouldn't be unrealistic to suggest that at some point in time, to work ie to make more and more becomes a habbit maybe in some cases an addiction.

A lot may also have to do with self gratification. It is impossible to suggest that there is not one owner of a multimillion dollar company that does not at some point enjoy the reverence he is given by the people working in his company. He would practically have a dominion of his own, not very many people would want to give something like that up.

Part of it may have to do with the fact that doing their job is the thing they are most accustomed to doing. Some of these guys have been so succesful with what they do because they know so much about the field which they work in. Some, I would imagine, would work in the field which they work in because they simply enjoy it. That's how it was 'easy' for them to make the money they did.

Some may even make more money for selfless goals (although I personally think that is a minority...sorry to all those rich people reading) :)

It's a mixture of things even though they have plenty of money they may still want to make more because they enjoy what they are doing, but I think it does get to a point when it becomes greed and the fact of keeping up the fancy expensive lifestyle and staying in the public eye,and keeping your name a reputation well kown, even if it's for doing things that aren't so good.

Greed and a need for power. However, it was good to read that Sir Tom Hunter is proposing to give £1 billion to charity.

lets call them greed and their motivation is to keep on top and dominate. Insecurities yes they had too much as having more money means more control over their surroundings.

It is the collector's instinct partly. Don't you collect things. I, for instance have collected more music Cd's than I could find time to listen to in several lifetimes. Another reason is the competitive instinct - the pride of being richer than so and so.

Greed and the Power and their monumental egos. Posh Beckham is a perfect example. Tom Cruise is another, with him it's more the Power that comes from having heaps of money.

Rich people want to make more money because they like the thrill of making deals and being successful. Just because they have made huge amounts does not quench their thirst. Money is a byproduct of what they want to achieve.
