Lol, good question. I have the same problem, how do they expect us to look busy when there is nothing to do and they won't give us anything to do. Why do they want us to work for a whole day when after we finish the regular stuff there is nothing else to do? I got so bored that I downloaded a free trial typing program so whenever the boss walks by I am at least typing away. And I read e-books, and straighten up my desk periodically. And since I like to write, I started working on a story that I have been writing at home, so it looks like I am writing something important. I walk around our small office and pretend I am cleaning up, like pushing in chairs, or I will go the lunch room and tidy up a little, and I will even go the fish tank and watch the fish for a couple minutes. Sorry I don't have any better ideas to offer, I hope you figure something out. Have a great day at work!

You work in Japan, right?
Type sth>Pretend thinking hard> delete it> type it again>repeat several times
Make a print out.Copy it> make some minor corrections on the copy>repeat the prosedure several times>
Find a dictionary and check every second word. Pretend you are not satisfied with the result and do an internet search
Make on graph> change the type several times
Write long mails to your family-noone will see to whom you are writing to if you cut the greetings and scroll the text up.
Rearrange files/documents/other printouts and pretend you are checking every one of them carefully.

I had an old chief on one of my ships. He's 'look busy' by getting a clip board with some papers, tilt his hat back on his head, lean forward a bit and go walking about the ship!

i work in a restaurant. One of my customers came in and told me that he would go around ,all day at work, and carry a coupla 2X4's back and forth ,across his work site, when he didn't want to be bothered. LOL
He suggested that i modify that to suit my job. We came up with ,... when i didn't want to be pestered by my boss ,that i should walk around with the menu open,as if to study it for something and point into it and nod a bit, every now and then. :P
you could do something like that. ;)
how about , depending on what your job is... you could just dampen a cloth and kinda polish up stuff ,while you're standing around. (and ,most esp, when you hear the boss coming . ;)

Well just a thought {do some actual work}. If you are at work isn't work assigned or given? Or if you are one of those individuals who speeds their way through their assignments, slow down and stretch your work out. Just a suggestion.
Good Luck!!!!
