I disagree with the cliche that you will KNOW when it is labor. With my first baby the early labor seemed so mild that I was totally not sure. Even with my second the early labor was not bad. It did feel like a hard tightening low in the pelvic area - like a belt wrapping around and it included back pain and a bit of weakness in the legs. In early or pre-labor they were every 15-20 minutes and I was still out and about running errands. Once they were about 5 minutes apart I would have to do some relaxation breathing but was still able to function. During second stage labor though, when I was at the hospital, I would have to stop and put all my concentration into relaxing during each contraction and could not speak.

Yes she can have back labor. Mine felt like the most gosh awful charlie horse in my lower belly area.

A back ache is normal for being pregnant in the last stages, because the added weight on the front of her body puts stress on a spine that was not designed to carry an unbalanced weight load that pregnancy brings. A back ache does not mean she is in labor.

Labor pains will generally stop a person in their tracks and make breathing a matter of concentration at the peak of the contraction. Anything less than that is probably not the real deal.

Imagine trying to pull you bottom lip over your head and that is a contraction and birth all summed up!

No really, it is true that it can start like period pain, but everyone feels it different. Getting pain in your back and legs is normal but a real contraction takes your breath away, you can't talk or laugh and the pain is like a huge vice wrapped around your pelvic/stomach/back area. If you can still move, talk or laugh when you think you are having a contraction then you are either in really earlier labour or not in labour. Once she goes quiet and has heavy breathing, its a true contraction.

Tell her that she will absolutely know when she is in true labour as the real thing is unmistakeable. (a cliche i know, but very very true. any woman will tell you)

LIke it has been said every woman has different reactions to contractions. Mine felt like a cramping in my lower pelvis and my back hurt. But I was able to talk through them until I was almost dilated to 6. If you are really concerned you need to call her doctor. It could be something else other than labor and the pain is signaling a problem. OR it could be nothing but pregnant muscles being overloaded. Call the doc!
