Throughout history there has always been "dooms dayers" who claim they know when the world will end. Some use Biblical inferences or complex calculations which they believe lead to the exact date at which the world will end. For example, some people thought the work would end at Y2K. Most of the dooms day talk is just cult or nut-job conspiracy. I'm sure 12-21-2012 will pass just like any other day.
Hope my opinion helps!

Are you actually serious?
This is not complicated, nor does it require any knowledge of math or science at all.
The Mayan calendar will end (technically) in December 2012. However, the mayans were an ancient tribal people who no doubt changed the face of history with many innovations in astronomy, building, and the arts. HOWEVER, this does not mean that they were soothsayers and could predict the future.
There is noone on the face of this Earth that can tell you for sure why the Mayan's calendar seems to end at that time, however, it has no bearing on humanity's future.
Absolutely nothing will happen in December 2012 except for everyone's favorite holiday break (be it Hannukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, etc.)
PS. quantum claustrophe: The asteroid you are talking about is not going to flyby Earth until about 2030, and it will have a close approach (in astro terms) but most likely will not affect the Earth in anyway.

Dec. 21, 2012 (in our calendar) happens to be the last day of the present "long count" in the Mayan calendar.
Some people, remembering the fun that came with scaring people about 31 December 1999 (Y2k: the day all computers blew up and we all died, remember?) decided to have some fun about this one.
The Mayan long count is a very long period (approximately 5160 years), so no one remembers that the world ended the last time the long count ended (probably because their computers blew up and... well, you know the rest).
So the day after the end of the long count will be... the start of the next long count. Happy New Long Count. I expect a gift.
The Mayan calendar has its cycles tied in with Winter Solstice (hence the Dec. 21 date).
There are a few web sites with good information about the Mayan calendar. Unfortunately there are far more sites that try to give this date some special esoteric significance, including some "end-of-the-world" predictions.
There is also an astronomical "event" connected with that date, but it has nothing to do with comets, asteroids or global warming or anything of the sort. It is a "positional" event: it has to do with the position of the Sun at the moment of winter solstice. The event itself cannot have an impact on us.
However, I am certain that some people will connect anything with that date to try and make themselves feel important.

While there is no actual basis in fact for that date, it does come suprisingly close to the various passes of an Asteriod that some feel could strike the Earth between 2020 and 2035.
Now, it may -- repeat only "may" -- be Possible Mayan Astronomers observed that asteriod once upon a time and predicted it's path.
If that asteroid passes it may have passed by in ages long gone by, again "may" -- and if it did it made two or more passes over a period of years.
These people may have had the math and skills to make a prediction, but due to error missed the date by 20 or so years.
If they did this, it is a phenomonal prediction for such an acient race.
But I tend to think it's all supersitition and serendipity.

Variouis people have projected that date from anchient tablets discovered in some temples. Recent plots of specific Asteroids determined that indeed one would fly by fairly close to the Earth sometime around 2012. The probability of a strike might be something like one in 10,000,000. yet people have chosen to just go completely bonkers about the concept.
Far more critical to the surviveability of the Earth in the near future is the outcome of the US Presidential Election in November 2008. if Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama get into that office it will surely mean the end of the world as we know it.

That happens to be when the Inca calendar ends. (Now, mind you, the Incas aren't around anymore.... so that should tell you something...) In a non-related story, there is a large asteroid detected a few years ago that's going to pass *very* close to Earth, also in 2012. At first, we didn't know how close, or even if we might be hit - but it's been determined that it'll likely pass 20,000 miles above Earth's southern hemisphere - dipping below our geo-synchronous satellites as it orbits the sun.
Unfortunately, we don't know what effect the Earth's gravity will have on this asteroids course - it's *possible* that in 2013, we'll be in as much or greater danger from this same rock because Earth *might* affect it's course enough that we *could* get hit...
Stay tuned.

That is not true. Some people found that the ancient Mayan people, thousands of years ago, wrote a calendar that is very different form ours. Some of them say that calendar ends on what we would call December 21, 2012, but others disagree. Some of those who say it ends in 2012 say that means the ancient Mayans knew the world would end then. I say that is a bunch of nonsense. It is just a calendar, and they didn't end it on that date anyway, they just got tired of writing and stopped. The Mayans could not predict the future.

I did hear the same.. on discovery channel.. the people of MAYA community calculated the end of the world with the help of mathematics. They announced a lot of things that were supposed to happen and many of them did actually happen. This could happen too but i dont really believe in it..!!

It has to do with the Mayan calender, also a few other ancient cultures calenders end on 2012. no one new what this meant till recently though modern astronomy we discovered a giant black hole in the center of our galaxy. on this date the earth and sun will be in perfect alignment with this black hole. This is similar with the theory that in the 80's when all the planets where in alignment the gravity would pull all them into the sun, yet we're still here.

This has no scientific basis of any sort. Almost every year something can be found in an old scripture claiming we're all going to die. Just a conspiracy that people like to spread around, and a stupid one at that.
