If there were 5 teams in all 6 divisions, that would make each league have 15 teams. This means that unless it is during inter-league ball, one team will not be playing on a given day. There would be 7 games in each division and then one team would end up sitting out a series. There would not be enough time to get in all the games of a 162-game season. That is why the leagues have 14 and 16. It makes all team available to play on any day within the season.

The real reason is that with 15 teams in each league, the MLB schedule makers could not formulate a way to facilitate Interleague Play. The AL asked the Twins, Royals, and Brewers to decide if one of them wanted to move to the NL. The Brewers were the only team to accept. Why an AL team was asked and not the NL I have no idea, but that is the explanation.

Because that would be smart and the Commissioner and MLB isn't that smart. Back int the day there were only 2 divisions and the best from each division went to the Series. Sounds too good right?

MLB is like all other professional sports. They are only interested in making money. Fairness does not enter into the equation. That is why there are divisions and playoff games. It is like basketball and football. There are 2 seasons, and a pre season. The more games the more ticket sales.

Hockeygod is right - If there were 5 teams in each division, that would mean 15 teams in each league. That would mean an unbalanced schedule with one team having to be off each night, and an absolute scheduling nightmare.

The leagues will be balanced several years down stream when expansion brings two new teams to MLB. In the mean time we will just have to deal with it the way it is.

because all teams are spread out though their time zones that would mess with the rest of some teams like the yankees being moved to the NL west they would receive a torture schedule.....however i am up for inter-league swap like sending the indians to the NL central
