'93 350 van. Starts and drives, then starts slipping. If you shut it down and wait a bit, it will go again. Clogged filter? I have a replacement trans ready to install but am wondering if it's a simpler fix? Local experts say it's a small broken thingy inside.

You can try a Filter and Fluid change. In changing the fluid you really should drain the Torque Converter. If, there is a plate, remove it and turn the engine until you see the drain plug on the Converter. It takes more fluid this way. If, that not fix the problem then it may well be the Transmission. If, you bought a used, you may have the same problem down the road again. But, if you do a swap and can keep the old slipper, you may be able to fix that "broken thingy" and have that transmisison for later. Just keep everything clean when you work on transmissions.
I have a friend works on a lot of the 700R4s. When I bought my Truck to pull a Camping Trailer he tell me not to use the Overdrive when pulling the Trailer. I have over 200,000 miles and it going strong. If, it ever goes out I may try to Rebuild it myself and see what happens. But, I will do the math of Work Myself, Work by a Shop and Price of a "New" Transmission. The Dealer where I live I can get a "new" engine for around $1,800 and a "new" Transmission is $2,700. So, for $4,500 I can have same as new everything and be good for another 20 years. My truck is 1990 and I bet money I get 3 more years easy.
