It's really not as important for books.
Back in the early days of printing presses, some of what have become "Classic" books were written as a series for magazines. Alexandre Dumas' several books on the Three Musketeers began this way. Because there was so much time between issues, each of which contained a chapter, they would leave people in suspense until the next issue, to make sure they'd buy the next one just to find out what happened.

Some writers are taught, if your best chapters are numbers 5, 7 and 12, then edit the bool to bring half of those chapters to be chapters 1, 2, and 3, otherwise readers will never get as far as the best chapters.

The cliff-hanger's a sure fire way for the author to keep the reader turning those pages in anticipation!
will they get together in the end?
did the butler really do it?
does harry survive the last book?
well...you get the picture....! ;)

Cliff-hanging indicates: fear, excitement, maybe even a sexual reaction? So a book that is cliff hanging is keeping your attention and is one that you will tell your friends about so that you can relive that feeling again! and after they read it again.
