It is bad here in Phoenix. I get it every day. I say No. I have seen too many bad movies where God is on earth taking the form of a bum. Testing Humanity. So, I cannot be mean to these people. If one tries to approach me and start telling me a story, which leads into "I'm not begging, but....", I usually say get a job or something. Good question, Spun!

Well... I live in an odd neighborhood. Part of the area is filled with wealthy lawyers and businessmen and you walk two blocks and you are like way on the other side of the tracks. I use to feel sorry for the bums and the drug addicts and the homeless on "the other side of the tracks" and I would give them what I could until I realized they actually have a little network. They tell each other who will give them cigarettes money etc. Once I figured that out the answer was no. If they are that smart they can go get jobs.

Not often. BUT if and this is IF I am approached in public by someone who truly appears to be homeless I will give them a few dollars. The amount will really depend on how much cash I have on me. I was in the ruts like 20 years ago. So I KNOW what is is to be down on your luck/homeless. As such I have somewhat more sympathy to the position they are in. I have given as much as $10.00. Keep in mind I am NOT talking about someone who is a drug addict. I am talkin strictly homeless.

Yes. If they look like they drink or do drugs then I won't. But if they look like they really need the cash I'll give them money. But I ask what they need it for. If they say for food and I'm near a food place I'll go in with them. Just to make sure.

I ask them what they want it for, and whether they lie or tell the truth determines whether they will get what they ask for or not. If a bum that smells like liquor comes up to me and asks for spare change to get something to eat at 3 in the afternoon he's probably lying. but if he asks for change for a beer I'll give it to him just for being truthful.

I live in a small city , we have this one guy that walks around town and asks people for cigarettes, I always give him some! Fortunately that is only when I go down town.

Rarely but when it happens I give them some money. No one knows what they went through in life to get where they are now but a coin is nothing to me and maybe something very important to them.

I will dig out a few coins but not a lot because I know they're probably not buying it for food, but it still feels good to give someone something.
It's better to give to the charities, but then it's not as personal.

It never happens where I live, but I encountered it on a holiday overseas to UK. They're very demanding aren't they? I gave a few coins, and then felt guilty for giving it (they headed off and bought cigarettes) but I would have also felt guilty for not giving it.

I tell them that I will buy them something to eat, but not hand over money. That is enough to make them go away because they are usually only interested in cash.
