Pick up an aerosol can of Stoners Glass Cleaner from Wal Mart. You'll find it in the automotive department. When you spray it on it floats in a very thin layer. You need very little of this cleaner to do a super job. As other people have said wad up old uncolored newspapers and scrub in all directions until the glass is entirely dry.
I'm a very skeptical old man but if I could put mu name and phone number on this cleaner I certainly would. It really works great both inside and outside the glass. Do this job in the shade because in the sun the cleaner evaporates too quickly before it has a chance to do it's job.

Use a mixture of vinegar and water to wash the windows. Dry with newspaper (the black & white pages only). The vinegar will cut the grease and the newsprint in the paper grabs the dirt.

When I detail cars for auto shows, I use the purple glass cleaner "Sparkle" with paper towels, then apply "Turtle Wax Finish 2001 Car Polish" and wipe off. The windows will be super clean and repel dirt and water.
