I guess Duncan is too mature for a professional athlete as fans like to see immature guys running around making fools of themselves trying to be showboats, his desire for privacy, not wanting to be the center of attention, not wanting to be a showman (I mean when Dennis Rodman was on the Spurs, he was probably their most popular player at the time with the fans but I don't think that he got along too well with David Robinson and wasn't a team player as it was all about Rodman while a portion of the Spurs fan base disliked Rodman's immature antics, because Duncan doesn't give a great interview, Duncan's silent intensity, Duncan's four rings as a starter in the last 8 years (only San Antonio Cole High School grad Shaq can equal that feat in the NBA while Shaq is your more typical lack of fundamental immature NBA player who is always in the highlights - I mean Kobe Bean Bryant couldn't come close to a NBA Finals without a Shaq who Kobe Bean Bryant disliked or without a Duncan who I am sure that Kobe Bean Bryant would similarly dislike as Kobe Bean Bryant wouldn't be the sole center of attention) etc...

Or, maybe people hate success as Duncan's 10 year career with the Spurs has led to the best team winning percentage of any American or Canadian major team sport over the last 10 years.

Or, maybe it is Duncan's Caribbean Island "cool" and laid back style which is admired and respected anywhere else except in pro sports.

I think because media tries to make him sound like he's the best Power Forward to ever play the game. He's never had a team with no other legitimate all-star next to him. In the league today Kevin Garnett is just as good if not better but because of his lack of supporting cast he's not considered the best or a winner. He's been with one team for all his career & has played with David Robinson (one of the 50 greatest players), Tony Parker (one of the NBA's top 5 point guards), Manu Ginobili (all star SG), Michael Finley, Bruce Bowen (defensive player of the year many times), Robert Horry & tthe list goes on & on. Don't get me wrong Tim Duncan is a great player but the problem I have is that they put him in the same conversation with greats like Larry Bird who only won 3 championships, or Karl Malone & Charles Barkley who won none.

Lets face it Tim Duncan is a great player future hall of famer for sure and with already 4 rings! but.. people hate Tim Duncan because the fact that he doesn't like to showboat or be the center or attention when he's on that court he's a great leader and all but i think Tony parker deserves more credit for those championships specially this year when Duncan got shut down by the clevland defence tony parker stepped up but yeah I ALSO HATE TIM DUNCAN!

Because too many people think basketball is nothing but fancy dunks, behind the back passes, and shooting 3's. They have no concept of how to truly play the game. Tim is a true player without all the flash that everybody associates with basketball now a days.

As for the whining thing.... He doesn't complain anymore than any other player out there.

Fans of basketball are just like fans of every other sport, they build up a dislike of star players on other teams that consistently play well and beat their favorite team. Actually, Tim Duncan is a very friendly guy who gets very high marks from his piers. Therefore, you need to look no further than the fans themselves, who are the Creators of the "hate" image, Duncan never did anything to bring it on himself.

Who said people hate him? I think he is one of the five best players in the NBA. We don't know him because he never says anything. Why do people hate Lebron, Dirk, or Shaq? He is not the only NBA player or athlete that people hate on.

its not so much that everyone hates tim duncan, its more on the fact that everyone hates the spurs. although whether or not they are "dirty" is arguable, they really just got lucky during the playoffs. phoenix or dallas wer the better teams who really just got upset. i personally like tim duncan but i cant stand his spurs.

He is a whiner. Majority of the people liked other players that has won multiple championships. He could tackle someone and expect not to have a foul called on him. I hate when he clearly commits a foul and then want to turn and get that stupid look on his face.
