Pop music, often called simply pop, is contemporary music and a common type of popular music (distinguished from classical or art music and from folk music[1]). The term does not refer specifically to a single genre or sound, and its meaning is different depending on the time and place. Within popular music, "pop music" is often distinguished from other subgenres by stylistic traits such as a danceable rhythm or beat, simple melodies and a repeating structure. Pop song lyrics are often emotional, commonly relating to love, emotion, or dancing.

Pop music may include elements of rock, hip hop, reggae, dance, R&B, jazz, electronic, and sometimes folk music and various other styles. For example, in the 1920s–50s pop music drew influence mainly from jazz, beginning in the 1950s from rock and R&B, and since the 1980s, from hip hop. The broad appeal of pop music is seen to distinguish it from more specific types of popular music, and pop music performers and recordings are among the best-selling and most widely known in many regions of the world.

Today distributed by major record companies as part of a global music market, pop music often involves mass marketing through radio, television and other media, making it a part of many people's daily life. As such, it has also faced criticism.

"Pop" music is an American term created in the 50s - the birth music for everyone.

Previously music was just for the rich or the very poor. The difference being that the rich payed the poor to make the music. This status quo continued for some time until it was possible to record music on records. At first only the rich could afford records and the poor who had previously made the music were soon out of work. Eventually the price of records became lower as lower quality music was poduced. This music annoyed the older generation because of it poor quality. In America this music became known as "Pop" music as it annoyed "Pop" (father) so much.

Hence the term "pop music". It is Music that annoys Pop because it is of such low quality.

Examples of low quality "Pop" music are Rhiaana, Spice Girls, Nelly Futado, Enrique Englasias, Back Street Boys etc.

Actually most of the people who answered are wrong, the guy above me was the most accurate. I had thought it came from pop as in the beverage because it was bubbly like soda pop, but annoying the pop sounds good too. But its fromt he 50s and had nothing to do with it being Popular music so those knuckleheads that didn't know and made you feel stupid are even dumber.

its short for popular. All these teens who listen to stuff like my chemical romance, or just r & b music and say they dont like 'pop' music, have no idea what the word pop originated from.

If its popular, its pop music, simple as that.

'pop' as a music style was from 'popular' and denoted any non-classical form at first. in the 1960s 'pop' became identified as popular music that did not fit any particular genre, but which was intended to have mass-market appeal. one wouldn't describe 'beat' or 'soul' or 'rock' as pop in anything other than the most general sense, in the same way that 'classical' is strictly a particular epoch and form of orchestral/chamber music, but which is used to include mediaeval gothic, baroque/baroll, fugues, romantic, classical and other such schools.

Originally it was POPular music but the full word was not funky enough so it was reduced to pop.

Jazz comes from jass originally. It was a euphemism for sex, just as rock 'n'roll, boogie woogie and similar labels for different music to dance sensously to.
