There are different scales of weight in the Imperial System of Units.

The pound used for most domestic and industrial purposes is the Avoirdupois with 16 ounces to a pound. That is the one used in recipes and such.

Troy weight was used for gold and precious metals, and in that system of units the pound had 12 ounces.

There are 2 distinctly different 'ounce's :
1. The international avoirdupois ounce is equal to 28.350 grams. There are 16 avoirdupois ounces in an avoirdupois pound.
The international avoirdupois pound is said to equal 454 grams, or 0.454 kilograms.
2. An international troy ounce is equal to 480 grains [1 grain = a unit of mass weighing exactly 64.79891 milligrams], or 31.05 grams.
There are only 12 troy ounces in a troy pound. So, the international troy pound is equal to about 373 grams, or 0.373 kilograms.
The troy ounce is used only to express the mass of precious metals such as gold, platinum or silver.

14lb = 1 stone.
