Hi, my neighbours are having their whole house rewired. I am just worried that they may be planning an extension, They are on holiday so I can't check. Would this be a possible reason? Could they be converting their garage to a room?

probably needs upgrading. There's loads of new regulations now and smoke alarms need to be wired into the mains and you need a carbon monoxide detector. You also get trip swiches and circuit breakers. It's a lot safer. Just had my victorian terrace rewired.

I needed to re-wire my house because it is a 1980's house and had old cables in there, which did not have "earth" cable in them (electrician told us), so we couldn't have any metal/crome swithches and lamps (bu health and safety regs). Also - the bulbs kept blowing up very often and turnig electricity off in whole house when doing so. I was told this was because old wiring was not designed to support the amount of electricity we consume today.
But if your neighbours planning to do extention of some kind - they should submit planning permition to the council first, and this should be announced to all the neighbours. If you have not seen anything like this - I think if you ask council about it - they will telll you if any planning application has been applied for and you will have a chance to have your say. It has to be approved by all neighbours.

I would have thought that if you were intending to build an extension then you would wait until it was built and do the rewire of the whole property at one time

Have they applied for planning permision?
A total rewire is more cost effective than just doing a partial rewire. How old is the house?

what age is the wiring if it is old say over 15 years it may be a saftey point or just a good time to add extra sockets and lights so why worry about your neighbour ?how is your wiring ,,, when was that last tested?

if the wiring is old may need to be redone eg when u unplug things the sockets spark. when we added a new socket when redoing kitchen we had to have rewiring done as everything was old and in bad condtion. probably nothing sinister.

when you have your house rewired then it is normal to do all of it ..and you don't normally need planning to convert a garage into a room if its attached ..but you do need building regs

there are a lot of reasons that a house needs a re-wire. old wire cable no earth.extra sockets and plugs and fuse board
not good enough.and some time when you are having a lot of work done on your wiring it just has easy to have the whole lot done.

some houses need re-wired because they still have old electrics in them, it is for safety as well as economic value and cosmetic reasons but does not mean an extension is looming.
