big brother 1984 was a futuristic totalitatarian regime of utter control
so yes you are right
while the imprisoned people do have freedom of speech, big brother (TV) has the right to edit those words
he defines everyone
they have no personality but the one he gives them and thus no say in who they are!
big brother 1984 was a evil visionary attempting to make a better society
big brother tv making cash out of fools is a pale shadow of quality of the the 1984 version. metaphorically we're talking the difference beteen Darth Vader and Bart Simpson here

Which is based on the book by George Orwell. But yes, that was pretty much the start of the whole concept and Big Brother and that we are being observed.
