we have a 1995 golf...we were driving the other day in fifth gear and next thing the car started reving like mad... when we looked at the gear stick it was in fourth, I put it back into fifth and this time saw it slip into fourth..... we pulled in and turned the car off for a few minutes and then went back on our way... as we moved up through the gears absolutly no problem but when we hit fifth gear again it slipped back into fourth... We continued the rest of our journey going no higher than fourth and there was no problem.... but we cant use fifth gear... because of the hours i work i wont be able to bring the car to a garage until saturday so i just wanted to get some feedback before we go to the garage

well, a worn syncro will cause a grinding or a difficult engagement of a gear, but the shift linkage could be the problem, a series of springs and balls refer ed to as a detent assembly, actually hold it in gear, if the ball is being held out of the way bu a foreign object, then the linkage is clear to move out of gear again. might be worth looking into,

The syncronizer between gear 4 and gear 5 is most likely worn out. Stay out of 5th for now. You really shouldn't have need of it unless you have to do some high speed driving, in that case, you can lodge the shifter into place or use a bungee cord to hold it there, depending on the interior of your car.

Cant be worn syncros for a start 4 and r5 syncros a seperate units and if it slips out of 5 how the hell does it just slip into 4. number 4 syncro would lock it out and you would end up in neutral.to many arm chair mechanics on ere

It could be linkage adjustment which is very critical and requires a gauge which usually only a main dealer has. Trial and error is a waste of time. Otherwise you have a major box fault, which does not usually occur unless theunit is very old.

I'd have to agree with ZoneRider on this one. It does sound like a worn synchronizer. You'll probably need to take this one in.
