A wife is a glorified best friend. It is a friend that you have exchanged vows with and kissed on the lips. :)

A friend can be of either gender, male or female. Friend = pal, buddy, amigo.

A wife is a female spouse. A married couple is a Husband (man) and a Wife (woman).
