Origin of the term "Hip Hop"
Coinage of the term hip hop is often credited to Keith Cowboy, a rapper with Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five. Though Lovebug Starski, Keith Cowboy, and DJ Hollywood used the term when the music was known as disco rap, it is believed that Cowboy created the term while teasing a friend who had just joined the US Army, by scat singing the words "hip/hop/hip/hop" in a way that mimicked the rhythmic cadence of marching soldiers.[3] Cowboy later worked the "hip hop" cadence into a part of his stage performance, which was quickly copied by other artists; for example the opening of the song "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang. Former Black Spades gang member Afrika Bambaataa is credited with first using the term to describe the subculture that hip hop music belongs to, although it is also suggested that the term was originally derisively used against the new type of music.

Rapping

Rapping, also known as Emceeing, MCing, Rhyme spitting, Spitting, or just Rhyming, is the rhythmic delivery of rhymes, one of the central elements of hip hop music and culture. Although the word rap has sometimes been claimed to be a backronym of the phrase "Rhythmic American Poetry", "Rhythm and Poetry", "Rhythmically Applied Poetry", or "Rhythmically Associated Poetry", use of the word to describe quick and slangy speech or repartee long predates the musical form. Rapping can be delivered over a beat or without accompaniment. Stylistically, rap occupies a grey area among speech, prose, poetry, and song. Rap is derived from the griots (folk poets) of West Africa, Caribbean-style toasting, and American Blues and Jazz roots.

I don't know about rap but hip-hop got its name from africa bambatta (i'm sure there's a spelling error)... on a trip to africa someone asked him what his type of music was called and he responded hip-hop... and at the last hip-hop honors show on VH1 i think that KRS-One was quoted as saying that however he would have responded is probably what we would be calling it today

Without a doubt "Blondie" did in the late 70s or 1980 with her song "Rapture" where she "talk sings" almost the whole song. ie: he went to a bar then he ate a car, rapture etc. So since she talked the song Rapture, "rap" short for rapture became a name for talk singing a song! This has to be the best answer, just quickly Google "Blondies song Rapture" and listen to it, it will all become clear as a bell then! Ka boom!
