hi some motherboards are different and only except certain rams of stick. due check it out before you buy them as most places will not take them back.

Mixing makes and speeds can cause problems. When I worked for a pc manufacturer we had an Approved Parts List which was a list of what parts were OK with what. Mixing speeds is more likely to cause problems than mixing manufacturers of the same speed. Download a copy of Grigoriev's memtest to make a 100% sure.

yes different manafacturers is fine.
As for speeds, most RAM sticks are backwards compatible so if you use a 266 stick and a 333 stick, then they will both run at 266.

Different brands, different speeds, no problem on single channel mode. BIOS will just read the SPD of each RAM stick and synchronize their speed and timings. BIOS will default RAM speed and timings to that of the slowest RAM.

yes that will be fine - check on the chips themselves, chances are they will be the same anyway!
in answer to your second question, you could try setting the clock speed halfway between the two but i doubt it will run well - if at all

as long as the RAM is the same spec then the manufacturer doesn't matter.
