Your break fluid could be running low

The brakes.

The light is not just the handbrake light.
It also warns of problems with the braking system in general.
I would check the brake fluid level first.

A red warning light means "DO NOT DRIVE"
You should not have continued to drive the car when the light was flickering without having it checked out - you are putting your own life, and the lives of others, at risk by driving a car with potentially faulty brakes.

The electrical connection between your handbrake and the light is probably loose. If you know a little about cars, its easy to kinda dismantle the base of the handbrake and check the connection. Honestly though, as long as you remember whether the handbrake is on or off, there's no need to mess with it.
