I think that most politician's do not care about social security, nationalized health, minimum wage, etc. for a few simple reasons. One being that they are rich enough, that these are not concerns that affect them. The second being that most of them are old enough that they know they'll be dead by the time these problems reach their worst. Do you think I am wrong? Please explain.

No I think you are partly right. I believe that ACLU has a ring in the nose of the politicians and the drug companies have them i their back pocket while the voters just vote "Helter Skelter" allowing all of this to happen. What would happen if people refused to VOTE? Their terms would expire and they would be unemployed.
That is my gardening tip of the day.

I think you're right. They're a greedy bunch who are so far removed from the problems that the poor and disadvantaged face that it's become ridiculous to even listen to them and in an election year its even worse. They come out and they pander and then once elected they go back to Washington and do whatever they want. Until issues reach critical mass and force them to do something to hold onto their jobs they don't get any attention, only lip service.
Of course the other part of the problem is that we as a country have become so fat and happy that we don't really care much anyway. I mean even the average person on the street has it better than the working class of any third world country. If you live in a city then there's always a homeless shelter or a soup kitchen so you won't starve and there's always a hospital that is required to give care to the indigent. I'm not saying this is right or wrong but this is the way it is. It's kind of a messed up country all the way around. My one question however is......Why is this in the gardening section???

The real reason is because current workers pay people's social security. So, the baby boomers of the 60s and 70s are going to be retiring soon, and it will put a strain on current workers to pay those social security benefits to them.

We'll be retiring later and later, and by the time we're ready to collect, the baby boomers will have drained the bulk of the funds.

I agree with ME. The boomers will be using up the funds. I don't expect to see any social security payments when I retire.

I agree ~ these are issues that don't directly affect the people who have control over them.
So why would they care? When campaigning they have to convince us they care, but once in office their actions prove they don't.
