I was never an avid fan of metal until now. As a matter of fact, I used to despise most metal genres a long time ago. When I got into progressive rock, I was very curious of what technical/progressive metal was like. I discovered Dream Theater in the process, and was completely astounded at the superb music created by individuals who were genial virtuosos on their instruments. I soon dwelled into other excellent metal genres to search for innovative music, but holding my prog roots close.

There are various qualities that makes me appreciate the genre. The guitars solos incorporated within the complex song structures and unusual crushing riffs are almost flawless. They always fit within the concept of song, whether they are vindictive or neutral. It's almost like hearing the music speak, it's an eargasmic experience. It makes me sit down and listen to it carefully, appreciating every aspect of it. Even the drums has to have complicated playing styles, in order to make the music a living experience. Whether it's the brutal blast beats of death metal, or technical drumming of prog metal, they all share the same trait of talent and commitment. The lyrics too, are superb, unlike most rubbish today. It's not some " I love you, you love me, I'll love you forever till I die," bullshit. The lyrics are elegantly written down, as per the music. Most of them are based on philosophical, conceptual or fantasy based themes. Even if the lyrics are gory - like in some bands, they are still fantastic in the way they're written. The band members also have excellent muscianship, working together, composing elegantly to make something out of nothing.

Out of the many musical genres I listen to, I consider metal to be one of the best.

Everything about is awesome...if we're talking about actual heavy metal, not modern "Nu metal" or whatever it's referred to as, you've gotta love Bon Scott's and Ozzy's vocals with AC/DC and Black Sabbath, respectively. We don't need screaming!

And sheer energy is the best part!

i started listening to it because of my brother.
i play guitar myself so i love listening to the guitar solos,
and i love the energy listening to it that it gives me.

i can't really explain why i love it so much...it's like an obsession.

Ecpecially the song B.Y.O.B by system of a down and walk by pantera.
i know exactly what you guys mean by being completely
relaxed after listening to it. everyone thinks i'm weird when i say that lol.

the guitar solos. the vocals. the energy. the spirit. the masculinity. the roar.

the feeling it brought you when you started listening to it.

the complicated composition of song that kick the ****** *** out of people who said, "if you'll listen to metal and rock, you'll be stupid". Metal is almost as complicated as Mozart's classic.

the sight of the people in disbelief that you like this music, while they listen to whining rap.
yea, we love to piss those people off.

the anger.

their legends.

just about everything.

Black Sabbath's great, AC/DC's great, Iron Maiden rocks as hell.

The energy , the attitude and the guitar solos.

I have always listened to Hard Rock, so, when a neighbor turned me on to "Ride the Lightning", I was hooked.

I can't think of a better answer than the one you already gave. Maybe its because it speaks to us in a way that all the other crap out there just can't touch .
