Mg reacts with H+ ions.
Water doesn't have many, but H2SO4 has a lot more.

Mg + 2H+ -----> Mg2+ + H2

it has do with acids. Water is a very weak acid, in fact it is amfoterous (it can be both acid and base), and sulfuric acid is very very strong acid, you might as well try other acids and see what happens.
