I have decided to start reading more. I am really into History, military, politics, and problems facing the world. I would like any books I read to really enhance my knowledge. I want books like "Good Will Hunting" style, you know, books that just make you smart, and more aware.

Please leave brief descriptions of books you recommend.

I thought Night by Elie Wiesel was a wonderful book. It's the story of how he survived Auschwitz and Buchenwald during the Holocaust. It won the Nobel Peace Prize for literature.

Walls and Bridges(trilogy) by Hardy wills.

(Not to be confused with the John Lennon album)( no doubt it was a book Lennon read at some point, and he pinched the title)

Its about a first time criminal who hides out in a monastery. I will say no more because the first few pages are so well written, it is much better to read it not knowing what happens. I was drawn in immediately, and yet surely no reader can expect the explosive direction this book will take. It is difficult to find, and second hand bookstores or a good library are the best chance. I was lucky in that it was handed down to me from my grandfather.

Try Jeff Shaara's books. He right's historic fiction in which most of the characters are actually historical figures. Obviously he didn't create these people, so the historic part is more the dialouge and some of the events surrounding them. I've found myself looking up some of these people to see if they were real or if some of the events he talks about actually happened.

Also, try "The Killer Angels" by Shaara's late father Michael Shaara.

On the non-fiction side I'd suggest "God Rest Ye Merry, Soldiers" by James McIvor. It's about Christmas during the Civil War and is rather fascinating.
