Purple dye was rare long ago... only the wealthiest people could afford it. As such, purple cloth came to denote the upper class. Folks with less money would sew patches of purple cloth on their clothing to make themselves appear wealthy.

A Roman poet by the name of Horace, upon critiquing the work of another used the phrase 'purple patch' to refer a flowery bit of wording or imagery that detracted from the overall work. He was commenting that language (like people) can be inappropriately and ineffectively concerned with appearance to the point of the ridiculous.

Why is what called a purple patch? Why is a purple patch called a purple patch? I have no idea why a purple patch is called a purple patch, or, for that matter, what a purple patch is. Sorry, Spiderman. Or lady.

Purple prose is sensuously evocative beyond the requirements of its context. It also refers to writing that employs certain rhetorical effects such as exaggerated sentiment or pathos in an attempt to manipulate a reader's response.

The term purple patch is also used in a more general, and more unequivocally positive, sense to refer to a period of outstanding achievement

why purple? why not?
