I think your question may need slight clarification.

Dont forget, for many ancient cultures, it was all about DESTINY, and you had no real choice in the matter.

Contrast that with modern Western thinking, where its all about taking matters into your own hands and SHAPING YOUR DESTINY...

Very subtle, but huge difference.

Even today, modern day Indians place huge importance on a name. Depending on time and date of birth, astrological charts are consulted.

This is called 'Rasi' These will give you certain letters that a name should begin with. Failure to do so, will result in things not being quite right. Doesnt mean anything catasclysmic though!

I currently have a 5 week old that needs to be named this week and we still havent thought of a name beginning with P (Rasi)_ that we like so any help would be appreciated!!

Yes, if you change your name you can change your future. Both the ancients believed this and so do we today. Even by changing the spelling or abbreviation of the name that alters the numerological significance of the name.

Hello dear!
Well, it influences, but does not determine! Maybe that is why in classical times and before many had multiple names, as we observe in Iliad and Odyssey, in Mythology and even the well known Plato was his nickname! As people were growing up and showing specific character, the citizens (mainly the Mentor) was giving them a nickname which was mostly showing the character of the person!
