In many ways, I like them better because it seems that they are judged by their answers rather than by their portrait. It seems that if a sexy womans pic is there, but it has a dumb answer, it still has a chance to get the "Best Answer." Similarly, if it is a question about feminism and a male portrait is there, the answerer may not get "Best Answer" because "he" is not qualified to talk about women's issues and struggles.
It's odd that it is a gray face; why not just a blank box?

The vast majority of them tend to be Level 1 "newbies" who have yet to fully utilize Yahoo's extra features. The others just prefer the blanket anonymity. Don't fret. I've seen some rather spooky portraits by some longtime users.

A few months ago, Yahoo Answers was downloading stuff and everyone's avatar reverted back to the grey "shadow-man" avatars for a night. It was TRULY scary, all of those blank grey faces lined up in a single column. It actually gave everyone the heebie-jeebies.

Perhaps they like the anonymity of just being a non-descript
grey face...or maybe they can't be bothered creating an avatar...
I think the avatars are pretty cool though. I like the cartoon me. Some people go the extra step and put a real photo on here. I like a little anonymity. I doubt anyone would recognize me on the street from my cartoon version. Tee hee...

Actaully I find the little cartoon pictures far more unnerving-- I would rather view an abstraction that denotes anonymity than a simulacrum that purports to be something true.

Yes, they scare the bejeezus out of me.
Oh, if only I could be like all the beautiful people and have a little cartoon emote that looks nothing like me representing my name... which isn't my real name... in fact, it isn't even a NAME.
You know what freaks me out? People who call themselves words like "imperialism". That's just plain spooky.

I am TRYING to find a suitable photograph to use. Have patience.
I will NOT create one of those ghastly computer generated things that Yahoo offers. They're grotesque, and make everyone look like soulless, vapid, drooling, idiotic Jesus-freaks.

Thanks for the compliment.
I am not scared of grey portraits, but of grey thoughts!
