It had little, if any, negative impact on the presidential office. President Ford pardoned Nixon only a few months later and it was business as usual.
Where Watergate had the greatest impact was on the people of the US. The generation that lived through it lost faith in government and in elected officials. By the next generation, however, it was all forgotten.

Watergate was big & splashy and pretty much made it impossible for a Republican to get elected to the Office in 1976 but Americans have extremely short memories and by 1980 Republican Ronald Reagan swept to victory and by 1984 it was a 'New Day in America.'
In brief; little to nothing. Presidents continued to do what they wanted rehardless of the risks. WItness Reagans involvement with the Iran-Contra Affair and Geo W's demand that things be his way or no way. The only time that Americans got angry enough to lynch a President was when he got a 'hummer' under the desk from an Intern. But as long as the President is a Republican the lessons of Watergate are (safely) ignored.

What it did is caught Richard Nixon in a network of lies that led up th his resignation, Because if he did not do so he would have been booted out of the oval office. He has disgraced by the break in of the democrat party office in other words he would not have come out as well as he did if he did not resign.

Our founding fathers felt a president should only be impeached for 'High Crimes and Misdemeanors"
The attempted impeachment of Nixon, on the rather petty crime of lying about an illegal record search, set a tone of political incivility that resulted in the impeachment of Clinton on the rather petty crime on lying during a sexual harassment trial.
The over reaction to Watergate, has revived the reprehensible practice of using the legal system to harass political rivals. This is profoundly harmful to democracy and has no place in America.
