Betta fish can live for a very long time, with proper care. Actually, I've seen some very old ones.. one reached almost eight years old! It all depends, though. You may have gotten your Betta when it was already slightly older, or it just might not be the healthiest fish. That does happen from time to time. You can take him to your nearest pet store (as long as they sell fish, of course!) and have someone check him out.. He could have an illness that can be treated, or something! Good luck!

My beta named Edward lived to be 3 years old. By that time he looked really sick. His "scales" looked tattered and he kept having little seizures. He also would look dead for a while and lie on the bottom of the tank, but then when I tried to fish him out he would swim away. Maybe your fish is just sick.
Beta's normally don't live very long (1-2 years)

Most bettas kept at home live about 1-2 years; under perfectly monitored laboratory conditions they can live to 8 or 9 years.
