My pomeranian puppy would rather use the litter box than go outside. I have a cat, they really like each other they sleep and play together. I was just wondering if my pomeranian used the same litter box as the cat if the cat would still use it to?? I really don't want 2 litter boxes in my bathroom b/c it is kinda small. What do you people think, has any one experienced this besides me? If so what did you do. He won't even go outside half the time he will hold it until I leave or go to sleep and then relieve hiself in front of the litter box...plz help!

We live in an apartment and he was using the bathroom outside the first 2 days we got him but now he just wants to pee inside, I watch him really good and i take him outside each hour, even at night b/c I don't sleep well. I have stayed outside for 30 min at a time and he still wont use the bathroom, but as soon as I take him in he finds a way to get out of my vision for like 2 seconds and pees, I don't know what to do, the area outside out apartment has alot of parking and not alot of woody's type areas! Plz help, I am a very patient person but I am at my wits end here!

I don't think you have any choice here. I could say yes, the pup could use the cat litter box, however, there would be problems. The cat wouldn't use it and if he did, the dog would eat all the goodies. So that solves that. Put the litter box for the cat in the shower or bathtub and use puppy pads for the pup. You must keep this little pup enclosed in with the pads for training. Big mistake to give him the run of the house. You can never train a dog when you do that. The pups' got the idea, but the owner doesn't. You MUST confine the puppy to an area where the pads are. As the puppy gets older and has learned that he can not just use the house as a potty he will learn that he can go where ever he wants to outside. It takes time. Be patient. I'm talking 8-12 months for potty training. Be consistent and don't give him the whole house or he will take it. Little dogs are more difficult to train, because a whole house is a big place. Most dogs won't and don't potty anywhere close to where they sleep and eat. That's just the nature of the beast. So take a lesson here, and keep the pup confined all the time to an area where you want him to potty. Don't forget to praise him when he goes where he's suppose to. Really praise him. Good luck.

well what i think of that . i think thats odd why odnt you just buy some puppy diaper pads from the pet store where you can use one puppy pad and leave it on the floor so that whnever youre dog need to pee or poop he can use it instead going in the litter box cause you know that the germs can cause bad habit and even leave too much bad healthy for both of them shareing the same litter box . even will make youre bathroom go stinky and even leave alot of idorited after . you might have do change it over over . and might get onto youre dog and cat skins. plus you should train youre dog potty train if you hadnt done that yet.

You must train the puppy to go outside, he is smelling the cat urine and thinking it's ok to pee "outside the box". Cat's and dog's urine smell very different. You will have a very good chance that if he does use the litter box, your cat will start peeing "outside of the box". Put him out, before you go to bed and watch him....stay there till he gets the idea that he is outside until he goes. Cats can share, sometimes that doesn't work either with their own breed, dogs and cats sharing will never work. Hope it works out.

Ask your vet, of course. But, jealousy can play a big part. Make sure you give your cat has plenty of attention, and cat toys. Are the stools runny or too often? Is she eating right? Are you using a scoopable litter (smells better, easier to use)? I had trouble when my cats (2 now-10 years old, and a homeless one we have taken in). when they were kittens but they are great now with the box. After she eats, for just a small time, you might put her in the area with the box. Reward her when she does it rght-praise her. NEVER hit her or treat her bad. And don't give up on her. Your future rewards will please you, cats are wonderful!! GOOD LUCK!

your dog will eat the cat feces and will get sick. The puppy can also get an impaction from eatting the litter along with the feces.
I don't understand the whole puppy pad thing. You said you don't want to teach your dog to go potty inside, but isn't the litterbox inside??

I would never have a dog and cat use the same litter box. Dogs tend to like to eat the cat waste which can give them some health issues like worms and such.

If they are willing, it's fine. Many cat's are particular about their box, though. The dog won't give a hoot!
