In order of highest possibility.
1. Your dog's tail was whacking on the inside of the door and it really would sound like someone was knocking from the outside. Your dog was either sleep walking, could not sleep, went for a drink but the bowl was empty or needed help to go out for an early poop and pistle.
2. An intoxicated person went home to the wrong house and found his/her keys would not open the door and decided to knock instead.
3. Someone, whether good or bad, is being pursued and needs refuge.
3.5 Someone trying to pretend needing refuge but intended to harm you.
4. Kids around the block, with no school to attend and wanting to escape the hot summer night, hoping to pull an early haloween trick on you.
5. Sudden change in temperature and humidity was momentarily warping your door and its frame.

I don't know. I do know if someone knocks at my door at 3 am I'm not answering my door unless I really know who it is because usually nobody comes knocking at my door at 3 am.
