for 20 grand? A LOT. You could upgrade to a 3 or 4 rotor engine, add a turbo or supercharger, get the engine ported, and put a full set of bolt on parts on. Your car would probably be putting out close to 800 hp is you spent the whole 20 grand on adding power. But a better plan would be to bring the power up to about 550 and then focus on upgrading the suspension, tires, and drivetrain and also try to find ways to make the car lighter. With 550 hp and a fully upgraded suspension and drivetrain you'll be able to smoke just about anything in any situation.

I would suggest that there are better ways to get a better ride.
The RX8 is a joy to drive, and moderate horse power increases can make it a joy to drive. A Corvette will never be in the same class as the wheel base is to long and it weighs to much to handle as well as an RX8.
It is not so much a question of how much HP you can get, but rather how much power can you keep glued to the road. The big block AC Cobra was quick, but because of the power to weight ratio it was a bear to handle on a road course.
If you can get the power to weight ratio down to 10 hp/ pound you will have more then most drivers can keep on the road. This should cost less then 20 grand.

A loss of 20 grand is what you'd get and a car that is better for displaying at a car show then driving on the street. If you really have 20grand to spend and it must go to a car then you'd be an idiot to not sell your RX8 and buy a new 400 HP Corvette. You'd need more then $20,000 to make an RX8 come close to the Corvette in performance.

The best option would be to yank that POS rotary motor out and replace with a 3.5 litter Nissan engine with a Stillen Supercharger added and then a new exhaust to match.
