In order to be a rift valley there needs to be a substantial craton upon which rifting can occur. Examples: Great Rift Valley of East Africa. Rift valley in Antarctica. Rio Grande Rift Valley in southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Rhine Graben Rift Valley of Europe. Lake Baikal Rift Valley of central Asia. These are all on continents. New Zealand is a pair of two mid-sized islands. No rift valley is possible there.

Rift valleys are also found along the center of the mid-ocean ridge system. For example, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge rift valley. Near New Zealand, you have the ridge that encircles Antarctica. There are also rift valleys in the Indian Ocean and others in the Pacific.
