91 Geo Prism LSI, started making funny noises as I pushed on the gas, then it started feeling way wrong, so I pulled over, then it died on me. I then tried to restart it, It sounded like it was turning over, but wouldn't start, so I then stepped on the gas, when I did, It made a loud noise, like the engine blew up and a bunch of smoke came out of the engine. Later I saw a large puddle of oil on the ground and a few metal pieces.

with the noise and the oil on the ground alsometal laying around if I were you I would crawl under car with some light and look for a hole in the block or oil pan...I am afraid you have more of a proplem than a head gasket........... USUALLY running hot or above normal temperature, lack of power and or miss in the firing secequence. Sometimes white smoke of steam coming from the exhaust os unexplained absence of coolant or water in radiator.. Sorry but it sounds like it is time to put that one to bed.........good luck and hope I helped

The few metal pieces, and large puddle of oil doesn't sound good. I think that you have a worse condition than the head gasket. Sounds more like you blew the engine. Chances are very good you will need a whole new engine.

Sorry to have to tell you that, but it is what it is.

I don't think you blew a gasket through the head. ( You mean you think you blew out the gasket between the head and the block)
This sounds much worse. I expect you threw a rod, (broke the connecting rod between the pison and the crank) and it came out through the side of the block. If so, the engine is ruined.

large puddle of oil......metal pieces under car.....does it look like the end of a connecting rod........the headgasket is the least of your worries as that is not the case.....you through a rod......means engine ...is......no good ....time for a new car
