In addition to HAX's answer, Sometimes rear brake shoes are two different thickness. For example on the left side, the shoe on the vehicle front of the backing plate may be thinner than the one on the same side vehicle rear of the backing plate.

Also, is the p-brake cable so tight it might be engaging?

Best way to do rear drum brakes is one side at a time that way you can always look at the other side for direction.

Sorry to hear you had that much trouble BUT now you will have to go get a manual, pay close attention to the diagrams.... You probably had a ridge on the drum so now the shoes are seated on the inside...... look on the inside of the backing plate for an oblong slot perforated od filled with a rubber plug, inside you should see a wheel (which is the self-adjusters), try to rotate it untill the wheel is free-do this with the tire on for leverage-when the wheel frees up with the help of a hammer tap lightly on the inside rim of the drum if it does not come off........Everyone says brakes are easy but now you know better, experience helps......hope i did.....Get a manual for your car

You may have installed the shoes in the wrong location. Drum brakes have two different length shoes, the long shoe goes in back the shorter one goes towards the front. I also wonder if maybe you had your park brake set. You really should let someone who has experience with brake repair teach you before trying it on your own. Good luck!

not quite what i would risk my life on, sounds like you need to adjust the shoes back down to the minimum. as brakes wear, there is an adjuster that compensates for the shoes getting smaller and the drum diameter getting larger. look in the book about this, but remember one side is a standard thread and the other is a reverse thread......
