It's like anywhere else. Be yourself, be friendly, be helpful, and just get out there and meet people. I can't think of any situation that is better for meeting people than starting college. Everyone needs to make new friends, so they are really open to meeting new people.

You'll meet a lot of people in your dorm the first week of classes, most probably on your hall. Don't be embarrassed to ask one or more of them to join you for lunch or dinner at the dining hall. They're looking to meet people too. Plus you'll have a roommate who you'll hopefully like.

Getting involved will also help you meet people. Early in the semester, a lot of organizations will be out on the drillfield with information on their clubs. There's also an information session for all the clubs that usually takes place in Squires. Check the VT website for dates and more information. Join one or two of the organizations and you'll meet friendly people who have similar interests as you. Also, read the fliers around your dorm and in the academic buildings to see what's going on around campus.

I saw a book at Tech Bookstore that had tons of advice on surviving and making the best of being at Virginia Tech. I can't remember the name of it, but describe it to one of the employees there and I'm sure they'll know what you're talking about. It had tons of great info.

You can start going through the organizations here:

Good luck and have fun.

if you're living in the dorms, hang out in the common areas and you'll meet a ton of people in no time! I went to ASU and each major also had a break room where you could mett people with the same major as you. join clubs or sports or whatever it is you like to do. heck, just leave your door open in the hallway and someone will come around asking if they can join you with wahtever movie you're watching. I met my roommate while I was hot-gluing CDs to my dorm walls and she offered to help.

basically, just do what you want to do and go to places where there are people and you're bound to make some excellent friend.

Join clubs and study groups and just introduce yourself to your classmates.
