My god, I cry when somebody looks at me cross eyed. but if I'm looking at a movie, if someone is crying on the screen and I'm sympathetic to that person, then the tears start rolling down my cheek. As for a book, it simply has to remind me of a past event in my life and I'll start to bawl. To give you an example. I was reading a short story recently about an old fashioned shoe repair store where you used to sit in a little cubicle in your stocking feet while waiting for your shoes to be repaired and the tears started streaming down my face because it brought me back to a time in my life that I had completely forgotten about. Yikes if I don't stop typing, I'm going to start crying again. WAAAA WAAAAA WAAAAA

People cry when they relate to one of the characters in a book or movie. We may wish we were that person, share a common dream, or have lived the pain. Nevertheless, we place ourselves in his or her shoes and share the suffering, adventure, agony, or the happiness of the individual with whom we identify. There is a beauty in people who permit their imaginations to soar.

If a movie taps into your emotions by either you identifying with the character or sympathizing with it; whatever happens to the character causes an emotional reaction. If the character is happy, you feel the same emotion. The same for if something sad happens.

when your all attached to a character and they die with those wonderful words of farewell.

one thing that does not make me cry (whether for joy or not) is when a guy fights for a girl and wins. I don't see why girls cry over it (heck I'm a girl and I think it's worth nothing more then an 'awe' not a cry fest)

When someone loses something or someone they love or a dream they have worked tirelessly to achieve is taken away. To see someone strive for something they ache for and finally achieve it only to have that for which they have worked so hard to obtain suddenly taken away, even if its just something that represents a form a security in life, breaks my heart.

When the protagonist gains everything he set out for but for a greater cost than anticipated. In other words they lose everything, but there is still that one hope left in front of them.

I think it's mostly when I can relate to the story and it's able to touch my heart. Then, i will start tearing up and sobbing. I suppose when the hero of the story dies too, that sucks! :(
