is there another way to fly using the tanooki suit in super mario brothers 3?

I know in order to fly I have to run and jump but is there another way using the full raccoon suit? i keep reading on boards that you can use it to fly but isnt that the same as using the leaf? whats the difference between the 2?

flying as a tanooki is exactly the same as flying after a leaf. the difference is that when you push down and B you turn into a statue that cannot be hurt. also, jumping on bad guys and turning into a statue before you hit them will kill many things that regular jumps can't (like [most] plants from pipes, spiky things, etc..)

also, if you have a p-wing (pegasus wing) and you get a tanooki suit in a level, you can still fly as if you had only the p-wing

the tanookie suit i believe is the same as the leaf yet you press down and you become the statue
