Maybe you need to set the mood a bit more. Use for adjectives, similes or metaphors a describe what you feeling or what you want to portray.

Dear poet...be thankful that dark thoughts are difficult for you to come by...may they always be so. The "darker" poems come from a place nobody should wallow in. These thoughts are not just "hateful", they go far beyond hate to the baser part of human nature, and if you have trouble tapping into these emotions and ideas, then bless you, don't try so hard.

If one day the darker thoughts come, put them down...until then, enjoy the fact that your life has been absent these thoughts, feelings, emotions and concerns...they are a slippery slope and can be an anchor that weighs you down or breaks your will.

If you should tap into these thoughts, allow the force of their will to guide your lines, whether they be free verse or rhyme...you'll know when the style doesn't fit the thought, just as you know by someone's expression if they truly mean you harm...there's a dark, ineffable quality to the truly dark that sounds false unless you truly know its nature...stay away from these feelings for as long as you can.

Keep writing and don't fear writing about life's beauty and of other positive things...there's time enough for darkness.

Think first of the things within your experience, then start making lists of words that make the pictures you see more vivid. Build your vocabulary actively, find different ways to say things. Work with the rhythm of words, try beating them with a finger on the table as you say them. Run through as many synonyms as you can. Read other poets, and not only one style. Which ones grab you? Try out as many styles as possible.

To write dark poetry you have to understand it. Think about things that have caused you pain, write about when you've been hurt, write metaphors to describe it.
Hope i helped.
