i strongly suggest valerian root. it's great at relieving stress and tension! you can get it over the counter and it's a great sleep aid! if you have one of those "racing minds" or "i can't turn my head off no matter how tired i am" then this will definitely help. you can find at your local grocery store in the pharmacy or herbal remedy section. start off taking 500-1000mgs, 30-45 minutes before you go to bed. now you can get this stuff in capsule form and it's 100% safe (my whole family has been taking it for years and our family doctor actually recommended it) however the only downside is that the more potent the brand your taking the stronger the smell. and this stuff smells AWFUL! but it's worth it. within 5-7 days you should notice a definite change in your sleep.

WARNING! i strongly do not suggest that you take Tylenol PM and booze, in any form or combination. the main ingredient in Tylenol PM and Advil pm, or benadryl for that matter is diphenhydramine. here's what happens when you take it:
You can walk into a drugstore and choose from an array of sleep aids, offered without prescription. The main ingredient of over-the-counter sleeping pills is an antihistamine. Antihistamines are generally taken for allergies, but also make you feel very sleepy. Common over-the-counter sleep medications are Sleep-Eze, Sominex, Nytol, and Unison; they contain antihistamines such as:

diphenhydramine hydrochloride,
diphenhydramine citrate, or
doxylamine succinate.
In general, over-the-counter sleep medications are not a good choice because they:

Are not intended for long-term use.
Interfere with mental alertness during the day, so you should avoid driving and other similar tasks. You may also be at risk for falling asleep
Reduce the quality of your sleep by reducing time you spend in deep sleep.
Use over-the-counter sleep medications only for transient or short-term insomnia and in conjunction with changes to your sleeping habits. Be sure to pay attention to your body’s physical response to these sleep medications.

also look at the links on the website i've listed they have some good remedies!

I hope this helps!

Melatonin is a natural sleep aid. It'sa protein that helps your brain to stop all the chatter. It can also make you feel just a little drowsy. Not a lot, just a tweak. You need to take it on an empty stomach about an hour before you plan to go to bed.

Also, there's magnesium. Its good for reducing muscle tension, so if tenseness is keeping you from sleeping, magnesium may help.

It's great that you're going natural. The medical options only make you groggy and that grogginess may carry over into the next day.

I hope this helps.

That's a good question.. from personal experience having gone to an actual sleep clinic, let me give you some advice here. What I find to help me sleep is:
-Drink herbal tea b/4 you go to bed such as Chamomile (make sure it's non caffeinated) or Imperial White Peach (reminds me of Christmas)
-Have a salt water bath (use Epson salts) and bubble bath.
-Buy an aromatherapy oil pot, and place a few drops of Jasmine, or Vanilla in there. (or, Rose & Lavender)
-Make sure you have clean sheets, and pjs.
-Don't go to bed until you are ready. If you lay in bed and you can't fall a sleep, then go in a different room and read. (doctors told me this, otherwise it'll increase insomnia. make sure you aren't watching tv, or going on the computer).
-Sleep with a fan on, or an aromatherapy machine. It's known that the rhythms from those can help your brain stabilize and relax.
-Sleep in a dark cool place
-Try yoga b/4 you go to bed (buy a video) or just stretch
-Buy a blue lava lamp. (blue=relaxing color)
-Don't have any sugar b/4 bed
-Write down your thoughts b/4 you go to bed in a journal. This way your mind won't go into overdrive. Also write down the things for tomorrow that you don't want to forget. Then, relax in bed knowing everything is taken care of.
-Try to keep regular sleep hours every day and night. I still have a hard time with this one
-Buy a cuddly blanket, one that makes you feel safe and cozy. Try experimenting with softer materials.
-Buy a "Somnea" kit from Fruits & Passions. It includes a room spray, lotion, bed powder, bath salts, bubble bath etc. The smell is so relaxing.
-Buy lotion from The healing garden I suggest "zzz therapy sleep well" or "Green teatheraphy"

Hope that all helps. I usually have a bath b/4 bed with the Somnea bubble bath and aromatherapy pot/oils, then dab a little ZZZ therapy lotion on my wrists, and neck, have a white peach tea (Walmart), and then listen to my aromatherapy machine or cd. Sometimes I'll use Sephora's Indulgences Whipped Body Delight in White peach and rub that all over.
Sweet Dreams ;)
Sorry it's long, just wanted to give you some good idea's. The links below can give you more info on the products I've mentioned :D

try not to feel too girly here, but lavender scents work. it somehow intoxicates the mind into a relaxation phase and sets the mind at ease, leaving it freely to rest and for you to get to sleep.

best of luck

i think everybody has their own thing that works. some walk, some read, many meditate to relieve daily stress and make way for a calm that lasts 8 hours or so...
