D backs stands for Defense Backs aka DB's. Their job is to make sure nothing gets past them. They cover the recievers and they also are the last line of defense for the offense to get through. In a 4-4 defense there will be 2 corners and 1 safety. In a 4-3 of 3-4 there will be 2 corners 1 strong safety and 1 weak(free) safety. There are different packages that coaches can work in to change things up also. The DB's will either have a zone to cover or they will be playing man to man.

A defensive back? Well it's either a corner back, safety, and a LB is sometimes referred to as a defensive back. They either play pass defense, which is what they do most of the time or rush defense, which they might do 3 or 4 times in a whole game.
