I support strict gun control including background checks at gun shows, a federal registration system to monitor sales of guns, and stricter laws concerning gun ownership, storage and purchase. After all, guns were invented to kill things. Granted, they can be used for other things like target shooting, but killing is their original purpose. The reason the right to bear arms was included in the Bill of Rights was so the citizens of newly independant America could be ready to fight off any attempt, British or otherwise, to gain control over their country. This neccesity for guns is no longer present, but American culture is so saturated with guns that any attempt to pass legislation banning the ownership of guns would be shot down before the first draft was even finished.

The statement that gun control promotes violence is neither fully true nor false. Guns are a very gray, inconsistent area of this country's legislation. The link below is to a page linking to pages written by pro-and anti-gun controllers. Unfortunately, I have no straight yes or no answer for you. This is one of those questions you need to research and explore yourself. I would like to remind you, however, that "if you choose not to decide you still have made a choice."

Gun Control is the biggest load of crap there is. It cannot and never will work. Gun control aims primarily at keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals, the problem is that criminals don't follow the law by definition, so why would they follow another banning them from owning a weapon? Felons cannot own firearms, yet many repeat offenders get sent back to jail on firearm charges like possession and armed robbery. The fact that felons own firearms PROVES gun control does not work. There are well over 250,000 REGISTERED firearms in America, many more than that are actually here. Those are not all going to disappear because of a law. I think that society is misjudged, currently in 42 states private citizens CAN legally own fully-automatic firearms, and in most states citizens can own semi-automatic versions of military rifles. You would think that with all these "evil" weapons in the hands of average people, that there would be mass killings daily, yet there are not. The Second Amendment was written to allow the citizens of America a chance to overthrow a corrupt government or defeat an invading army. These are not outdated, and are in fact very real threats today, especially the latter. To do this the people need to have a chance at victory. I think that any mentally fit, law-abiding citizen should be able to own any small arms they wish. Small arms include; handguns, rifles, full-auto rifles, sub-machine guns, machine guns, etc. I am in favor of having no gun control whatsoever, with the exception of limiting ownership to those with clean records. States that allow citizens to carry concealed handguns have statistically lower crime. Think about it, if people were allowed to walk down the street with an AK-47 around their back, do you think many criminals would be very anxious to rob a store/bank/person or commit other crime knowing people may have a high-power rifle on them?

Gun control is ridiculous.

I have had access to guns since I was old enough to start hunting with my dad. Today I own several pistols, several rifles, and a shotgun. On top of that I am issued several pistols and a rifle by my agency. I have more guns then I could carry.

Yet I have never robbed a liquor store. Also, none of my weapons have spontaneously gone off and shot someone or something.

Outlaw guns and the only people that will have them will be the criminal element who have already demonstrated an indifference to our legal system. Criminals are the ones we need to target. Not law abiding gun owners.

Yeah, right. How about cholesterol control while we're at it? Heart disease kills dozens of times as many people every year as guns do, and there doesn't really seem to be any redeeming quality to fast food, so how about requiring everyone who steps into a McDonald's for a Big Mac submit written permission from their doctor saying that their cholesterol is low enough that the burger won't kill them, have them wait three days for a medical background check, then make sure that they report their purchase of the burger to their HMO for cholesterol intake registration. It might, (and I emphasise MIGHT) go a long way in preventing heart attacks and obesity, but most likely it would just be a ridiculous attempt to make everyone life harder just because some people don't seem to realize that McDonald's for breakfast, lunch, and dinner probably isn't a good idea.

Guns are inanimate objects, and are only as good or evil as the people that wield them. To blame guns for crime is as ridiculous as blaming obesity on food. People are the problem, not guns.

I oppose gun control. I feel a law abiding citizen has a right to have guns in their home. Not only for protection but many people use it as a form of recreation (hunting, skeet shooting, etc.) Banning guns will not keep criminals from obtaining them. They are criminals for crying out loud! It is not like they will abide by the laws all of a sudden. Banning them only effects the people who have a right to have them. I have heard that some countries that ban guns have had an increase in crime. Criminals aren't going to be deterred if they think the person is unable to protect themself.

I support control of gun owners -- not guns.

By that, I mean that gun users should be licensed in the same way vehicle drivers are licensed. People should be required to prove they know how to handle such dangerous instruments, and that they are not a danger to themselves or others.

Other than that, punish people for violent crimes only. Not for just carrying something because they MIGHT commit a crime later.

gun control is horrible
when countries start implementing gun control, there has been genocide and crime rate increases.

germany, russia, guatamala, china, turkey, uganda and some other countries are examples that implemented gun control before starting to EXTERMINATE their own citizens.

criminals are criminals because they dont abide by the law, so why are they going to abide by a law that says they cant own a gun? they aren't and they know law-abiding citizens aren't armed it makes them easier and more likely to rob/attack or whatever against us.

Gun control in the U.S. needs to be brought in ASAP. It is totally ridiculous that everybody spouts this second amendment thing. The reason that was brought in has long since past. The Wild West. Outlaws. Bandits. Times have changed and the 2nd amendment needs to be changed. As a European I cringe everytime I hear another college massacre but I do honestly think you all make it far too easy to get your hands on guns.

gun control is pointless...its not like a law is going to stop a criminal from getting a gun...its about as stupid as expecting a bank robber to not to rob a bank because the teller told him that robbing the bank was illegal...
