First off, August and September are the prime months for hurricanes. So I don't think we've seen nuthin yet.
I like to tell people to think of hurricane preparedness as a week-long camping trip. What would you take?
First, you need water, and lots of it. Not only to drink but to cook with, and to flush the toilette. You'll need about 2 gallons of drinking water per person per day. PLUS, a gallon per person per day for flushing the toilette. This is where stopping up the tub and filling it with water comes in handy.
You need food that can be eaten without cooking such as fruit, energy bars, peanut butter, crackers, etc. Or get a small Sterno stove so you can cook modest meals. MRE's are available at most camping stores.
Batteries and glowsticks. You'll need lots of batteries for flashlights and a portable FM radio. Stock up now. They go quickly once a storm threatens. Use glowsticks at night to help conserve batteries. Do NOT use candles. If you start a housefire, help may not be able to reach you.
Babywipes and deodorant. You may be out of clean running water for a couple days. Babywipes help you freshen up. Guys should invest in a battery-operated razor too.
A battery-operated fan will be a creature comfort following a hurricane. Buy several and stock on the necessary batteries.
Have extra cash and gas on hand. Gasoline stations are one of the first structures to collapse in a strong storm. Have a gallon gasolone jug in your car trunk. Make sure it's filled. Also ATM's run on electricity. If you lose power, they won't work. Have cash.
Make sure your cellphone is always charged. Use sparingly after a storm, if it works at all. Also, a first-aid kit is highly recommended.

water comes in handy, some dry foods, flashlights and batteries, boardgames, and make sure to board up the house or put the shutters up. And if you have a generator, fill up the gas cans BEFORE the storm.
