...the US is just debating legalizing Civil Unions and even trying to have gay marriage/civil unions banned?

How does that make us, the US, look as a country of equality on the international playing field?

Yes, it most certainly makes the US not look like the "land of the free".

Any time the argument is based on "we don't want you to do, because our religion forbids it, so we're making it illegal" -- that's tragic for any country that claims to support freedom.

Unfortunately, there are a WHOLE LOT of people that disagree with same-sex marriage. There are 5 states that has legalized it, but for the whole country to legalize it, ALL the states have to agree with it (including the people in those states), they gotta send it to congress, then the president (or however, they do it lol). It's going to take a lot to legalize it. A lot of people are against it because they see it as wrong and against nature. I would honestly vote for it. It's not hurting anyone, and if they love each other, let them get married.

I think the U.S. doesn't want to upset the conservative people. I know living in the South that gay marriage is frowned upon. One of my friends from elementary school is gay and engaged (even though it's not legal in the state). It's taboo here. I know I won't tell my extended family that she's gay even though they grew up knowing her because I don't want them talking about her. I think the US doesn't want to deal with conservative people demonstrating against a newly passed law. I think the US should just let the states decide what to do because every state has its own population that either agree or disagree with the issue.

Singapore has legalised beating with canes for crimes, should we step up to the plate and compete with them? Canada has two national languages, do we need to make every language of every nation a national language in America? In Mexico you can buy prescriptions drugs just as easily as you could over the counter drugs, do we need to catch up with them?

Seriously, our country our terms. If the time comes when Gay marriage or Civil Unions are recognized in America, so be it. But we'll do it as the time comes. Not because Canada or the UK has already done it.

It makes you look exactly the way you are. So scared of doing anything outside of the Bible that you literally terrorise yourselves into paranoia. I would equate the current US Fundamentalist Christian approach to life no better or worse than a strict Muslim country (note: not radical Muslim...I wouldn't go that far). You are supposed to be the Land of the Free and the Champions of Liberty. See any anomaly here ?

It makes us not look like a bunch of misfits that have no moral values whatsoever. I am proud to say gay marriage is banned forever in wisconsin which is surprising with all the libs around here. The people have voted and the law prevailed.

It makes the United States look like a nation that is not afraid to be different, unpopular or non -conforming to a widespread opinion.

The UK and Canada are great examples of spineless countries and the US is wise in not following their lead. The purpose of any civilization is to procreate and while I respect what people decide to do in their bedroom, I do not believe in same sex "marriage".
